The Team

James Smith – Team Principal

James won the Kalas cup in 2011 and immediately retired on a high… but then was forced out of retirement by James Williams.  This year James S has decided to let someone else have a crack at management and will this year act as Team Principal dealing with sponsorship and finances.  “I really believe that this set up with a feeder club is the way forward for a sustainable club and team environment”.

Martin Smith

Martin’s cycling career has seen more than 50 wins across different disciplines, including Road, TT, XC MTB and Cyclo Cross. After a largely disappointing 2010 season marred by a prolonged back/hip injury and lack of chances in a top flight team, Martin turned back time in his first season with Primal, rejuvenated by the fresh challenge. He doubled his ‘jersey’ collection by taking the overall GC going into stage 3 of the SERRL 3 day, winner the overall points completion in the Kalas 2 day, with the pinnacle of his season, and probably his career, the overall race win in the BC National Masters (Vets 40-44) in July. 2012 will almost certainly be Martin’s swansong, with a new career beckoning.

“I am looking forward to riding alongside fresh blood in the ranks making what will certainly be the strongest regional team in the UK, and hopefully get a few more wins along the way”

Wayne Coombs

Wayne has raced for Great Britain and in 6 countries and shown good team work in 2011, his first year with Primal Europe.  I am looking forward to helping the team move up to the next level in 2012 which for me means the team making an impact in Premier Calendar races. I would like to help the team’s riders make the most of their ability in 2012.

.

Richard Oram

Richard has won triathlons, biathlons, hill climbs, time trails and road races. He fits into the team as a strong all-rounder with the potential to increasing the team’s hitting power on the flat and uphill.

As a research doctor working on diabetes, and a kidney specialist in training he has more than a passing interest in sports physiology which is put to use as a medical advisor for Koolstof coaching.

Goals for the year include to keep on improving despite child number two arriving over the winter, to help the team to even more victories this year, and most importantly to enjoy the thrill (or maybe I should say suffering!) of racing…

Phil Borrett

I come from a squash background holding county titles for Somerset but moved to cycling 5 years ago. In those 5 years I have got to 1st cat level and have progressed steadily winning races and time trials at each level, most recently winning the second stage in the Tour Du Mortainais stage race as well as many good placing at National B level. This season with Primal I get my first chance to race as part of a competitive team with exciting ambitions for the coming season. I fell I’m a strong all round racer with a nose for a break. I’m training hard through the winter and am full of enthusiasm excited as to what next season will bring.

Adam Bright

Next year is my 4th season, my first starting with an elite licence. Before cycling I was a Senior A rower for a couple years but realised I was too short to be any good! Looking forward to riding with the team, you lot are so old and experienced I’ve got a lot to learn from you

Tom Stockdale

Tom has been riding since the age of 10 years old, but has never taken it seriously until a few years ago. He already has over 50 wins in his career. One of the biggest being the Cycling Time Trials National 10 mile champs when he was just 15. He has travelled and raced abroad numerous times. This year he is looking to step it up again, with some proper training all year under his belt, so he can see the level he can achieve in the sport.

Looking forward to the new season; getting experience from some of the older riders, to help get results in races. But at the same time, showing them the determination of a youngster.

Rob Willcocks

Rob has amassed wins in every discipline of cycling. Now in his sixth season of racing, he has the ability to go all the way in cycling and is highly sought after within the cycling fraternity. An Elite rider in previous years, Rob is an experienced road racer who is not afraid to sacrifice himself during races for the benefit of team mates. His race history speaks for itself.

“I’m looking forward to getting stuck in with the team again in 2012 and to competing in some high profile events”

Pete Haworth

Having spent most of his prime racing years locked in a kitchen somewhere working every god given hour. Peter took to racing quite late, having found his feet in cross country and mountain bike endurance races later turned to road cycling as means of fitness for the mountain biking, only to find that it was actually quite enjoyable. Quickly settling into the South West road scene, this coming year Peter has big goals for himself as a rider and as a team member relishing the task of being in one of exciting projects in the South West.

Judith Smith – Team Soigneur

Wow, what an amazing year for me in 2011…no way was I going to miss the next step for the Primal Europe Team.  I will be mostly be seen feeding the boys at the races, doing photographs and shouting my support to the riders and can not wait for the fun to start again!  Team support crew for 2012 also includes 2.4kids and Daisy May the dog.

Alex King – Team Soigneur

A Midlander by birth, cycling has been a part of my life from a young age through to the present day. I have also dabbled a bit in endurance running, athletics coaching and my love for human performance led me to take a degree in Sports Science.

I have raced from the Juvenile ranks through to present day though my work commitments are a heavy draw on training time and energy these days so I don’t do as much as I’d like. Competing in MTB XC, TT’s and Road Races as well as some amazing Sportives such as the L’Etape Du Tour – Act 1 in the Alps last year, 10,000 people on a start line really has to be seen to be believed – amazing.

My Junior years were spent with Coalville Wheelers CC, a great club that looked after its young talent, with National Champions such as Geoff Platts and Matt Bottrill around it was an inspiring place to be at that time, but our sport has changed, to develop talent and keep hold of that talent clubs and teams need to be ever moving and ensure that they have a good image, a good kit and a drive for success, it is this reason that I am proud to be part of the Primal Europe Team.

I believe that we need to reinvest in our sport to ensure it continues to grow and therefore I am a qualified and registered Coach with both British Cycling and the Association of British Cycling Coaches. I have also recently completed my training as a Regional Commissaire with British Cycling.

So I have been training again for a few months now. I finished my season at the end of September, my legs were just fried. I went with a few of the guys from my team this year (Team Qoroz) to the Nurnberg 24 hour bike race in the middle of August. It was 4 man teams, 1 lap each. The laps took about 50 minutes and were very rolling. One section had a 5km climb. We managed to win against thousands of competitors doing 31 laps. This was one of the...
