MK Bowl - Martin Smith AW cycles PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 July 2009 16:28

Having spent the afternoon working locally to my home area, I took the opportunity to put my bike in the van and race on my ‘local’ circuit for only the second time this year. In my previous race here, Si ‘Ernie’ Ernest took the victory whilst i grabbed 4th. Having won at least 1 race at the bowl for the past 5 seasons, I was determined to take the bull by the horns, despite it being my 4th race in 5 days.
Steve Golla (sigma) went from the gun, I followed immediately.

Upavon Summer Series, 60km, 20th July by Martin Smith PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 July 2009 16:25

Barely 28 hours after finishing the 120km hilly vet’s race, I wondered what I was doing on the start line amongst 20 odd other riders, but surprisingly no other from the team. I wasn’t the only solo rider as even more surprisingly, Juzy Hoy was the lone Felt rider.

Modbury Road Race no.2 - Thursday 16th July

A new race for me so I thought, but on the journey down I realised the course was one I had done a couple of years ok during a 2-up event. Only difference it was dry then.

On arrival we heard that the likes of Marcin Bialoblocki, Will Bjergfelt and Jon Locke (the previous race winner) from the Sports Beans team would be riding, luckly Will did not turn up but oh god this was not going to be a usual race, if there is such a thing ! and to add more to the mix, it started to rain, nice.

Well the race was neutralised before the first climb heading towards California Cross and the pace went up straight away. I was feeling ok but could have been better. The pace was pretty quick and then the first two riders escaped, Marcin Bialoblocki and close behind Doug Dewey. By the time we got to Kitterford Cross the 2 riders had around 20 seconds on us. The pace was kept high by both James Smith and Rob Wilcocks from Somerset RC down the descent towards Ermington. By now I was soaked through from the rain and the spray coming off other riders wheels. I was trying to keep warm but seemed to be getting colder.

I dont have time to train - Josh horowitz PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 July 2009 12:55
I often hear from cyclists who would like to race but “just don’t have enough time to train.” Even if you never plan to race, you can still see significant improvements in your riding with a limited time budget.

While long base miles and packed training weeks definitely help for even the shortest of events, it is possible to do well and even excel in these quick races as long as your training is smart and efficient. The fact is, most entry level criteriums are less than 45 minutes long. While endurance does help, the bulk of the improvement in performance can be gained in the 6-8 h many of us have weekly to ride.

Race Report: Aggressive and opportunistic Caisse d’Epargne domestique David Lopez was the man who grabbed the stage win glory at the top of the punishing drag into Alcoi at the end of another long hot day in the saddle with Euskaltel’s Igor Anton doggedly hanging on to the leader’s jersey despite Joaquin Rodriguez trying to wrest that single – but vital – second from him in the finale.

Roadside Pez St. 8: Everyone said that the real La Vuelta started today and they were not wrong. Three climbs close together near the end would sort a few things out, but it was an early break that made the news with Mountain Man Moncoutie leading the charge.
