Saturday, 04 September 2010 15:32

In a fast paced late season affair Pete Johnstone really was the strongest rider of the day firstly by going on an early break with Greg Sandy Somerset RC for the entire race before winning the bunch sprint to take the title.

RUTT does End to End PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 10 August 2010 09:36

Three weeks previously an end to end had been something i knew I would so some day.  I mean like most of my competitors the summer months are taken up with racing usually twice a week.  This is a problem for fitness though as you endurance ebbs away right through the year until an hour race seems like three hours.

This year however a gap in the calender appeared and I took advantage.  A phone call from Richard Wilkinson and suddenly i was taking part in the end to end.  Officially it is 867 miles thats if you stick to the A roads and take the direct route but being  averse to dual carriageways and certain deat we decided to avoid them where we could unfortunalty this  added on over 100 miles.

Talking about distance it takes almost three days just to get to John o’Groats at the tip of Scotland.  The nearest town is Wick and this was our bed for the night.

DAY 1

We arrived nice and early to allow for bike building, preparation and  photo shoots for the chosen charity Pancreatic cancer research.   Once complete we donned our t shirts for the start and then had a few more photos before handing the t shirts back then we were off.

Initially a flat start allowed me to start my video  blog today there were six of us with two guests who were going to tow us all the way to our destination Inverness.  However, this did not last long as the two guests were quickly dropped over the rolling highlands.

DAY 2 Inverness to Kinross

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43625828

After a good nights sleep we were up and ready to go from the Travel lodge inn Inverness with another 140 miles to Kinross in front of us.  Again we decided not stick to the main roads and quicly found ourselves climbing through an isolated forestry.

DAY 3

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43626020

So I had allready cycled further than  I had ever doen before and I was not even half way.  The other guys were also starting to suffer with each day taking a little longer to get on the road.  Today we would cross into England as we approached Carlisle.

DAY 4

Carlisle to Warrington

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43623596

Wow this looked tough on paper and it proved to be just as tough in real life.  Again taking the minor roads was niice and but made the route so much tougher.  Today was the day that I knew the second half of the support team would turn up _- Judith and Julie proved to super helpful.

DAY  5

Warrington to Gloucester

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43623565

Finally this should be a flat day but there was no way we could really avoid the busy roads today.  A long boring day in the saddle.

DAY 6

Gloucester to Okehampton

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43623542

A great day with rolling hills and flat fast sections, now starting to feel better knowing there was only one day to go.  This was the nicest Bed and Breakfast by far...

DAY 7

Okehampton to Lands End

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/43621569

So here is the last day and as you can see by the Garmin readout also the lumpiest with never ending small lumps and steep climbs.

So only 110 miles and we were done.  An epic adventure which proved to be more than just a training ride.  It was a true character building slog, every day and especially the last I went to new depths of tiredeness.  Thanks to all the support crew without whom we we would not have made it.

6th April 2009 – the day that changed my life

Bag was packed, bottles were full, tyres pumped, helmet on and I was off to get an extra hour or two’s training in with the Smith Drift before work. We met up and chatted away about the racing from the weekend, I had raced the Somerset RC spring crits and the Tom Hawkins RR so still had heavy legs but felt good as my form was improving and I’d moved up to third category.
We took a rolling route through Ivybridge and over the moors then towards my office at Burrator Reservoir. JJ departed back home at Wotter and I carried on to do a few laps around the reservoir before work.

A minute with John Locke PDF Print E-mail

How is your season going?  A bit up and down really.  There have been some good results, and I've helped the team achieve success, but I haven't had many days racing compared to most guys.  I'm starting to get going again now, and am going to be working with a coach for the first time ever...that should see some good improvements long term, as I'm not exactly known for my structured training!

How often do you get home?    I spent most of the winter and spring away, but since June I've been home quite a lot, and only racing domestically...it's nice to have some time to catch up on stuff at home.  Having said that, I'm now itching to go away racing again...must be the Tour bug.

You took a couple of years out why was that?   I got glandular fever when I had the form of my life, but it led to me being fatigued the whole time, and after one or two failed comebacks I decided to leave it a couple of years.  When I came back, all of those feelings had gone, and so I knew it was the right time.  I'm confident that those problems are behind me now.

Plans for next year team and you?   I'm pretty happy where I am at Rapha Condor Sharp, and hope to have more opportunities next year.  Some of the better races that were on my calendar this year got credit crunched, so fingers crossed I get a full programme next season.

Favourite race?  The Tour of the Battenkill in upstate New York was a cool race.  200k on dirt roads made for an epic, and thanks to a certain ash cloud we had a week in NYC too.  Pretty much wrote off 9 team bikes though...

Best win?  Stage 5 in the FBD Ras in late may...not at all planned, but it just all fell into place:  Made the break, attacked and thinned it out, covered the final few moves, cleared off up the finishing climb.

British Road Racing how does it compare today to foreign racing?  The UK still lacks that strength in depth.  It's good to see so many teams getting properly organised with only a small budget, but there just aren't the races.  It also seems that the tough courses are being phased out, as organisers fear a lack of entries...until this changes, the standard will never really rise.  If you look at France for example, there is a stage race in every department, every week, and that's true for all the catagories!   Of course, UK organisers are also up against it with the situation on our roads, insurance, police, and a lack of sponsorhip.  However, with the success of the Tour Series crits, and the coverage of Team Sky, I hope the sport can develop.

  • Vuelta '10 St. 9: Glory For The Little Guy
    Message by Edmond Hood
Race Report: Aggressive and opportunistic Caisse d’Epargne domestique David Lopez was the man who grabbed the stage win glory at the top of the punishing drag into Alcoi at the end of another long hot day in the saddle with Euskaltel’s Igor Anton doggedly hanging on to the leader’s jersey despite Joaquin Rodriguez trying to wrest that single – but vital – second from him in the finale.
